Literature Text

In that lingering moment
that last silent sigh of waking
I felt your breath on my lips

In the hush of the twilight
I woke to a whisper
Your heartbeat in my veins

        Engulfed in dreams
        I savor your embrace
I taste passion in your kiss

Clinging to the realm of sleep
I plead, in fear of rising
to yet another day without you.
This poem was written in November of 2006, in reference to a period of time I spent routinely oversleeping by several hours... sometimes I would sleep half the day away, preferring my dreams to reality.

Several readers have asked me why the first half of the poem is written in the past tense, and the second half, indented, is in the present participle. I explain it like this: The poem takes place on one specific occasion. The first two stanzas happened only moments ago, whereas the remaining two stanzas refer to a pattern the speaker has been experiencing.

Long after I wrote this poem I heard the song, "Dreaming With A Broken Heart" by John Mayer, and was shocked by the similarities between the two pieces.
